By Alex Crowe
A Victorian police sergeant facing child sex abuse charges has been arrested in Queensland and charged with more than 80 offences, including rape.
The 42-year-old was initially charged in June with one count of sexual activity in the presence of a child under 16 and three counts of accessing child abuse material.
Following his arrest in Townsville this week, he now faces additional 78 charges including two counts of rape, 30 of producing child abuse material and 38 of possessing child abuse material.
The alleged offences took place between August 2014 and May this year. Police said the man – a Victorian member of the Transit and Public Safety Command – was off duty when the alleged offences occurred.
The police sergeant appeared before the Townsville Magistrates Court on Thursday where investigators sought his extradition back to Victoria.
A Victoria Police spokesperson confirmed the sergeant had been suspended without pay since April 2023.
