Cherrington handed four-game NRLW ban for spear tackle

By Jasper Bruce

Parramatta captain Kennedy Cherrington has received a four-game ban for the spear tackle that led to her being sent off in round three of the NRLW season.

The suspension is the latest blow for the reigning runners-up, who have had to contend without injured recruits Elsie Albert and Rachael Pearson thus far and are the only side yet to register a win in the expanded 10-team competition.

Cherrington and teammate Madeline Jones upended Newcastle forward Laishon Albert-Jones in a dangerous throw during the second half of Sunday’s clash at CommBank Stadium.

For her role in the tackle Cherrington became only the second player in NRLW history to be sent from the field after Brisbane’s Ashleigh Werner received the same treatment for biting a rival in round one.

The tackle proved the beginning of the end for the Eels, who were trailing 18-4 but ultimately fell 38-4.

The match review committee categorised Cherrington’s tackle as a grade-three offence and referred her straight to the judiciary.

The Eels will be without the lock forward for matches against Brisbane, Canberra, North Queensland and the Sydney Roosters.

Earlier, Newcastle forward Caitlan Johnston accepted a one-match ban for the high shot on Eels rookie Kelsey Clark for which she was sin-binned.
