Boy, 13, arrested after chase in stolen car

A 13-year-old boy has been arrested after a police chase in Sydney’s west that ended when the stolen car he was travelling in crashed and rolled off the road.

Police attempted to pull over the Volkswagen sedan on The Horsley Drive in Fairfield about 2.30am on Wednesday, but the driver allegedly failed to stop and officers began pursuing the vehicle.

Police say the 13-year-old ran from the car with two others when they crashed a short time later. The boy was arrested nearby and is being questioned by police.

Police at first thought the 13-year-old was behind the wheel of the car, but Superintendent Micheal Mclean later said they no longer believed the teen was the driver. Police are still searching for the two others.

“We won’t allege the person we have in custody was the driver but was a passenger of the vehicle, albeit we will confirm throughout our inquiries,” he said.

Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden told 2GB’s Ben Fordham that the two others in the car were believed to be of similar age to the arrested 13-year-old.

“The car was originally stolen from the Colebee area,” he said.

“We’ve got this next generation coming through that are engaging in a whole range of serious criminal activity, not only a harm to themselves but to members of the community that may be using the roads at the time. It’s just unacceptable.”
